Awakening Your Qi Energy

This is an ancient Taoist meditation method for refining, raising, and circulating internal energy. Done by sending the energy via the ‘orbit’ formed by the major energy channels in the body. It is a Qi energy cultivation technique called the Microcosmic Orbit and is a classic Taoist Qigong meditation. It involves deep breathing exercises, as well as meditation and concentration techniques, and has a fantastic effect on the entire energy system.

This orbit is created by circulating energy from the front "Governing Channel" or "Du Meridian"; which runs from the perineum up the back of the body to the head, and the "Conception Vessel/Channel" or "Ren Meridian"; which runs from the head down the front of the body to the perineum. This is a basic foundational practice on which many advanced practices are based by acitvating the Microcosmic Orbit as a key step that leads to more advanced practices. Taoists believe that the Microcosmic Orbit meditation fills the reservoirs of the Governing and Conception channels with energy, which is then distributed to all the major organ-energy meridians, thereby energizing the internal organs.

MCO - Bonus Material - Dive a little Deeper

While the MicroCosmic Orbit comes from Taoist traditions, we often see an overlap in other cultures. Very similarly, we see this in East Indian Yogic traditions as well. They call the points on the MCO -- Chakras. As you may notice, if you are familiar with Yoga, that they seem to align. Why is this? Some theorize that the information overlap is due to the Silk Road, and ancient passageway that cultures exchanged goods, services, and ideas.

The Du and the Ren Meridians are the two channels on which the Qi flows.

MCO Theory & Practice

Every Point has an Opposite Point

Once you understand that each point is paired with another point, you can begin to experience the relationship between the front and the back of your body.

The Dan Tian

Where we store the Qi at the end of the meditation (that is, every meditation in the Tao) is an essential part of understanding these ancient Taoist practices.

FAQs

How do I connect the Microcosmic Orbit?

By pressing and relaxing the tongue against the palate without disconnecting it and slightly squeezing the pelvic floor (perineum). Do this for nine, eighteen, or 36 times. Then rest, and feel the energy flow down.

What is the importance of the navel?

It is the where the original Jing energy is stored, which is actually located behind the navel and in front of the kidneys. It is also where we transform all forms of energy.

What does it feel like when you complete the Microcosmic Orbit?

Some may feel a tingling, a flow of electricity, or a numbness. Some may experience cold, a sense of release, or a sensation like an electric shock. Some see color, perhaps blue, flowing down the Functional Channel. Some hear a frequency that they can bring to the tongue and then circulate in the Microcosmic Orbit.
